RED ALERT: MCI, HazMat & Active Threats
Credit Hours: 3 Category/Level: ALL Description: This course provides EMS providers with an overview of the principles and practices involved in responding to mass casualty incidents (MCIs), hazardous materials (HazMat) emergencies, and active threat situations. Participants will review incident command, triage procedures, staging and resource coordination, and the importance of scene safety during complex emergency responses. The course also covers HazMat recognition, placard identification, the use of the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG), isolation and staging considerations, and decontamination principles. Active threat response topics include hot, warm, and cold zones, Rescue Task Force operations, and Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC), including hemorrhage control, the MARCH-E assessment framework, chest seals, and prevention of hypothermia. By the end of this course, participants will have reviewed key concepts for recognizing hazards, prioritizing patient care, coordinating resources, and making informed decisions during high-risk, multi-patient incidents. This CE activity is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE).
